Heard a supervisor in Galveston say "if the gauge is dirty, it's still good", and I almost lost it
Was grabbing gear last Tuesday and caught that line from a guy running a crew on a dock job, and it hit me wrong because we all know a clogged gauge reads happy while your pneumo hose is packed with mud. We pulled a diver at 60 feet last month on a gauge that looked clean outside but was 12 psi off, so wipe the face and check the line before you trust it. What's your go-to check before a dive when the gear looks fine but you get that gut feeling?
That guy's line is the same energy as when someone says the oil light just needs a piece of tape over it. A clean face on a gauge only tells you the outside is clean, it says nothing about the guts or the line feeding it. Had a boss once swear by tapping gauges with a wrench to "wake them up" and I about walked off the job. The gauge reads what the trapped air tells it, and if that air path is plugged or full of crud, the needle is just guessing. Same thing shows up everywhere too, like a car that starts fine but has a bad sensor, runs great til it doesn't. Gut feeling is just your brain catching what your eyes skipped, so bleed the line and compare against a known good gauge before anyone gets wet.
