Can we talk about the 'waterproof' radio I bought for the dive boat?

Spent $120 on it, lasted about 20 minutes into a harbor cleanup in Charleston. Anyone know a brand that actually survives a splash?

That's a common story with so-called waterproof gear. The IP ratings can be misleading for actual submersion versus just spray. You might want to look for something specifically marketed for diving or marine use, even if it costs more.

Yeah, the whole IP rating thing is a real trap. They test that stuff in perfect lab conditions, not in the real world where you're actually moving around in water. I've been burned before buying a "waterproof" watch that died in a swimming pool. You're right, if you need it to survive a dunking, the marketing has to say dive or marine, not just shower proof.

Isn't it crazy how many things are like this now? Like @kaimiller said, the rating makes you feel safe but the real world use is totally different. I mean it's not just watches, it's with everything from phone cases to backpacks. They sell you on a lab test result that has nothing to do with actual life. Makes you not trust any of the numbers on the box anymore.
