Rant: I thought the new comic shop in town was just another cash grab

But the owner, Mike, actually knows his stuff and pulled a full run of 'Stray Dogs' for me from the back when I mentioned it once. How do you find good local shops that aren't just selling Funko Pops?

Honestly, just ask them to find something obscure. If they light up and go digging, you've found a good one. The shops that only care about new releases never have that deep backstock knowledge.

That specific test about asking for something obscure actually changed my mind too. I used to think a shop's vibe mattered more than the clerk's knowledge, but the way they light up when you ask for something weird tells you everything about their passion. Now I start there before I even bother looking at the new releases.

That's a good way to miss out on a great shop that just runs things differently. A clerk might not know every deep cut but could have amazing taste and point you to new stuff you'd love. Sometimes a clean, well-organized store with a solid selection of current titles is exactly what you need.
