I finally saw why old guys swear by early 90s Image comics
Was at a shop in Portland and heard a dad tell his kid these books were junk back then but they had a raw energy that nothing else matched. So I grabbed a copy of Spawn #1 from 1992 for $8 and flipped through it. I get it now, the art is crazy detailed and the story is simple but it feels like someone just did whatever they wanted. Anyone else pick up an old book and change your mind about a whole era?

Did that shop have the issue where Spawn fights a guy made of living garbage?

Hold up, are we really acting like flipping through a random 30 year old comic is some deep spiritual awakening? I grabbed a copy of Youngblood #1 a few years back for a dollar and thought it was a mess. Poses were ridiculous, faces looked like pumpkins, and the story was basically "angry guy shoots stuff." Spawn had cool cape tricks but I swear the writing reads like a kid trying to sound tough after watching a horror movie. People act like "raw energy" means something but honestly it just looks unfinished to me.
