Appreciation post: A comic trade circle with friends fixed my collection gaps

I was always on the lookout for old X-Men issues, but some were just too pricey online. Then I thought, why not trade with other fans? I mean, idk, maybe it's just me, but I asked around at my local comic shop. A few of us decided to meet up once a month with duplicates we had. We wrote a simple list of what everyone needed and what they could give. It turned into a regular thing, and now I've filled gaps in my collection without spending extra cash. The key is to keep it casual and honest, so no one feels pressured. If you're struggling with hard-to-find issues, try forming a small trade circle. It's really fun and saves you from hunting alone.

Hold up, you're still spending something, just not cash. You're trading away comics you could sell. I gave a buddy my extra Amazing Spider-Man 300 for his beat up Hulk 181, and yeah I filled a gap, but that Spidey book was worth real money. It's a great way to collect, but let's not pretend the stuff you trade has no value. It's a trade, not freebies.

Brianfox, you traded an extra Amazing Spider-Man 300? That book is a major key, and even a rough Hulk 181 is a solid trade. How did you manage to have a duplicate of such a big issue? Did your friend know the value he was handing over?

Man, @brianfox is totally right about trades having real value. It's like when people trade their time for something, not just stuff. They'll say a side project didn't cost money, but they spent nights and weekends on it. That time had value. Or trading a favor for help moving, you're still paying with your effort. His comic trade is the same idea, just with books on a shelf.
