A fellow fan shut me down for liking a specific villain

I was just talking comics with someone at the shop and mentioned who I think is the best bad guy. They immediately got mad and said only people who don't get comics would pick that one. Have you ever had another fan make you feel dumb for what you like?

Ugh, hearing about someone making you feel dumb for what you like is so frustrating! I had a similar thing happen with music tastes last week. I told a friend my favorite band from the 90s, and they laughed like it was a joke. I was so taken aback because music is so personal, you know? It's wild how fans can gatekeep even the smallest things. That kind of attitude just sucks the fun out of sharing what you love.

My cousin got into retro gaming last year and the amount of "you're not a real fan" comments he got for starting with later consoles was crazy. It makes you realize this gatekeeping virus is in every single hobby, from books to baking. That judgment just puts up a wall where there doesn't need to be one. Eventually you just stop talking about the stuff you enjoy, and that's the real shame.
