Chose a used Haas over a new Tormach for my garage shop

Honestly, I was dead set on getting a new Tormach 1100 for months. Saved up about $8,000 for it. But then a buddy told me about a used 2014 Haas Mini Mill he saw on Craigslist for $12,000. I stretched my budget a bit and went for the Haas. The tool changer alone has saved me so much time on a batch of 50 aluminum brackets I ran last week. Has anyone else gone for an older commercial machine over a new hobby one?

Man's like "budget stretch" lol that's like saying you just barely went over on a used Ferrari instead of a Civic. Tool changer alone pays for itself in a single batch of parts though. The Haas will still be cranking out parts in 2040 while the Tormach is for sale on Facebook Marketplace.

Troy I get what you're saying but I actually disagree a bit. A tool changer is great but not everyone needs to run a batch of parts every week. The Tormach owner might be making one offs or doing hobby work where setup time barely matters. And honestly some guys just want a machine they can plug into 120v in their garage without worrying about rotary phase converters or 3 phase power. Different tools for different jobs you know?
