Picked a phone camera over a DSLR for cloud pics and it worked out

I was deciding between hauling my DSLR or just using my iPhone 14 for a storm chase last month. The phone caught a mammatus formation way better because I could adjust exposure fast without fiddling with lenses. Has anyone else ditched big gear for a phone shot that surprised you?

Caught a whole lightning sequence with my Pixel 6 last summer that I would've missed completely if I'd been trying to change lenses on my Canon. The phone's night mode stacked exposures automatically and I got this crisp bolt splitting a dark sky with clouds lit up behind it. My DSLR friend was still messing with settings while I already had the shot saved and shared. Plus the phone handled the dynamic range way better than I expected for something so small - highlights didn't blow out and shadows had detail. Now I only grab the big camera for planned landscapes where I know exactly what I'm shooting.

Good gear doesn't matter if it's not fast enough.
