I finally switched to a heat pump, but my bills are still high.

I put in a heat pump last year to use less gas and help the planet. My power costs went up a lot this past winter, which surprised me. I think my old windows might be letting cold air in, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know a good way to check for drafts or if I should get a pro to look at the system?

Congrats on joining the heat pump club where your wallet still gets cold. Definitely check for drafts first before calling anyone, just hold a lit candle near your windows on a windy day. If the flame dances, your money is literally flying out the window.

My January bill actually dropped 30 bucks after switching to a heat pump, even with our old windows. The thing kept our house at 68 through that big freeze last week, no problem. Those draft checks are smart for sure, but a good unit doesn't just let all the heat escape like some people say. My old furnace ran constantly and still felt drafty, so this feels like magic in comparison.

My dad taught me the dollar bill test too. Close it in the window, and if it pulls out easily, that draft is stealing more heat than a flickering flame shows.
