My garage door opener gave up mid-drizzle, now I'm the neighborhood fob guy
Last Tuesday at 7:15 AM I'm backing out for work and the whole unit just clicks once and dies. The chain was fine, the sensors were clean, but the motor sounded like a dying cicada. I called three repair places in Westlake and the first available slot was Friday, so I spent 72 hours manually lifting that thing twice a day. Finally a tech came out and said the circuit board had a hairline crack, probably from the humidity off the lake. He quoted me $640 for a new opener, but I found the same model online for $410 and had my brother-in-law help install it in an afternoon. Anyone else around here ever had a unit fail right when the weather turns, or is my garage just cursed?

Humidity off the lake is no joke for electronics, and the timing being right when fall rolls in is not a coincidence. Used to figure openers just wore out from normal use, but after reading enough of these stories I'm convinced the wet air does real damage to those boards. Getting the same unit online and having family help install it was the smart move, $230 saved is worth a Saturday.
