Talked to a retired sweep in Asheville who said he never used a mirror for inspections, just a bright flashlight and a steady hand. Made me question all my gear.

That "skill matters more" idea misses the point. Good gear is what lets skill really shine.

What's the point of all the gear if the basics get the job done? That guy's method proves skill matters more than tools. Makes you wonder what else we overcomplicate.

Hold up, @robert_jones, I gotta push back on that. The right gear isn't about overcomplicating things, it's about doing the job better and faster. Sure, pure skill with basic tools can work, but good tools make hard tasks easier and let you do things basics just can't. It's like saying a master chef only needs a dull knife. They could manage, but why would they? Better tools let skilled people reach another level.
