My apprentice called me out on my brush technique last Friday
I've been sweeping chimneys for 12 years and always used the same stiff wire brush for everything. The kid pointed out I was leaving soot lines in older brick flues that I just couldn't see from ground level. He was right - I switched to a poly brush on a 65 year old house and the difference was night and day. Any of you old-timers ever had a rookie show you something that actually worked better?

Around here we mostly use the stiff ones too but that kid had a point on the old masonry. My apprentice showed me a trick with a shop vac hose taped to the brush handle and it cut my clean up time in half. Take it from someone who had to learn the hard way, sometimes the new guys see stuff we just don't.
