Pro tip: Stop buying the pre-seasoned meat packs at the grocery store

I used to grab those preseasoned chicken thighs or pork chops because they looked convenient and were usually on sale. But last month I did the math. The store brand seasoning pack costs about $1.50 more per pound than plain meat. I figured I could buy a bottle of basic seasoning for $3 and it lasts for like 20 meals. Plus the pre-seasoned stuff always has way too much salt. I tested it on a plain pork loin I had sitting in the freezer. Threw on some cheap garlic powder and paprika I already owned. Tasted better than the store pack and I saved $4. Has anyone else noticed the price markup on those things?

Gotta disagree with you here. Sometimes the preseasoned packs are a lifesaver when I'm dead tired after work and just need to toss something in the oven. Not everyone has a full spice cabinet or the energy to mix stuff up, so that extra dollar fifty is paying for pure convenience. I'll take the saltier taste over a skipped dinner any day.

Think about those seasoned packs like I think about store brand salsa. I bought a jar once, got home, and realized it was just tomato paste with salt. Ended up using the whole thing to marinate some flank steak that I overcooked anyway. Convenience is fine until you taste what you're actually eating.
