Overheard my neighbor saying her cat only meows at her when the fridge is open lol

My neighbor Sharon was telling her friend that her cat, Mittens, runs to the kitchen and yowls every time she opens the fridge door. She thinks Mittens is asking for food, but honestly I wonder if it's the sound or the cold air that triggers it. Has anyone else's cat got a weird obsession with fridge sounds?

That thing about "runs to the kitchen and yowls" sounds exactly like my old cat did with the freezer drawer. I read somewhere that cats can hear the high pitched hum of the compressor kicking on, and they associate it with food being available, not the actual cold air. So your neighbor might be right that Mittens is asking for a snack, but more like she trained herself to expect it from that specific noise.
