My cat stopped shredding the couch after I put a cardboard box in the kitchen

For about two months, my cat, Mango, was tearing up the left side of the sofa every single day. I tried everything, even those sticky strips. Then I read a thing about giving them a better scratching target. I put a plain cardboard box from a 12-pack of soda on the kitchen floor last Tuesday. He hasn't touched the couch since. Is it really that simple, or did I just get lucky with the placement?

I always thought cats needed fancy posts, but Mango's soda box proved me wrong.

Honestly, you might have nailed the "territory" part without even trying. Cats often scratch to mark their space, and the kitchen is a high-traffic family area. That box isn't just a texture thing, it's a big signpost saying "Mango was here" right where everyone walks. The couch might have been his old message board, but this new spot has way better foot traffic for his social updates. Do you find him hanging out in the kitchen more now too?

Wait, does Mango actually scratch the box or just hang out near it? @paige_harris is right, we buy the expensive stuff when the free thing works. Lunah86's point about the kitchen being the main room is huge. It's like he wanted everyone to see his mark, and the couch was just the closest thing. Now the box is in the perfect spot for that. Honestly, the texture probably helps, but the location might be the real win. You basically gave him a better billboard.
