I used to yell at my cat for knocking stuff off shelves, now I just watch her do it
I used to get so mad when my cat Miso would push my coffee mug off the counter at 6am. I would yell, chase her, and put her in the bedroom for 10 minutes. Then a friend who volunteers at a shelter in Portland told me something that made me stop. She said cats do that because they want to see if the object will move or make noise, kind of like a test. It is not mean, it is just curiosity. So about 3 weeks ago I started just watching her instead of reacting. I put a cheap plastic cup on the edge on purpose and timed her. She stared at it, tapped it twice, then shoved it off and watched the whole drop. Now I leave one decoy cup out and she ignores everything else. I feel dumb for all the yelling. Does your cat have a specific thing they always push off, or is it random stuff?

My old roommate had a cat named Pepper who was obsessed with this one specific spoon. Not any spoon, just a tiny silver teaspoon she kept in the dish rack. That cat would wait until we left the kitchen, then bat it onto the floor and chase it around like a hockey puck. We lost that spoon for a month once and found it under the fridge covered in dust bunnies. Honestly it got to the point where we bought a pack of six cheap spoons just so she would leave the good ones alone. She never touched forks or knives, only spoons, and only when she thought nobody was watching. Cats pick the weirdest one thing and make it their whole personality.
