Why does nobody talk about how a hostel towel fee saved me $40 in Lisbon

A guy at the front desk in Lisbon charged me 2 euros for a towel, and it made me realize I'd been packing 4 pounds of stuff 'just in case' for trips where I could rent or buy it cheap, so now I cap my bag at 18 pounds.
