Wasted $60 on a packing cube set that didn't fit my bag

I bought this 4-piece packing cube set off Amazon last month because the reviews were great, but none of the cubes actually fit inside my carry-on properly. The large cube was too tall by like 2 inches so I couldn't close my backpack. I ended up having to leave two of the cubes at home and just stuffed everything loose, which defeated the whole purpose. The smaller cubes were okay for socks and underwear but the zippers broke after one trip, you know those cheap metal ones that catch on everything. So I basically threw away $60 on stuff that barely lasted a weekend trip to Austin. Has anyone else had this problem with those generic cube sets that promise universal fit?

Oh man, I've been there. I bought a similar set for a trip to Denver last year and the same thing happened. The large cube was way too long for my Osprey carry-on and I had to leave it behind too. Those zippers are the worst, I had one snag and tear a hole in my favorite sweater on the first use. What I found helpful was measuring the inside of my bag before buying anything. I ended up getting a set from Eagle Creek that actually lists the dimensions for each cube, and they fit perfectly. It's so frustrating when something that's supposed to help organize just ends up being a waste of money and space.

Eagle Creek's the only brand that seems to get it right for carry-ons.

Man, that sucks. My buddy Mike bought a similar cheap set off some random site and had the same issue with the big cube not fitting his Patagonia duffel. He ended up using the medium ones for dirty laundry and the rest just sat in his closet. The zippers on his started splitting after like two trips to Seattle, total garbage. It's crazy how they market this stuff as one-size-fits-all when it clearly isnt.
