Warning: I gave up on packing cubes for a 12 day trip to Lisbon and now I can't decide if I was right
For 4 years I was the packing cube guy. Every trip I would roll my shirts into those little squares and stack them like bricks in my carry-on, and I swore it saved me space and kept me from digging around. Then last month I flew to Lisbon for 12 days and on a whim I just folded everything flat and stacked it straight into the bag, no cubes, no compression bags, nothing. The weird part is my bag actually closed easier and I could see every shirt at a glance instead of unzipping three cubes to find one sock. But by day 6 everything had shifted into a jumbled mess and I was digging for a charger like an idiot in a hostel in Alfama. So now I am stuck between two camps: cubes keep things neat but add weight and bulk, while flat packing is lighter but turns into chaos after a week. My buddy who does 20 trips a year says cubes are for people who overpack and he just uses one laundry bag for everything. What do you all actually do on longer carry-on only trips? Do you cube it or just dump it in and hope for the best?
