My zipper blew out in Lisbon with 4 days left and a flight to Madrid the next morning
Halfway through a 9 day trip, the main zipper on my 40L bag split wide open right at the baggage claim in Lisbon. I had a flight to Madrid at 7am the next day so I ran to a little repair shop near Rossio Square, and the guy stitched it for 12 euros in about 20 minutes. Now I always pack two small carabiners so I can clip the bag shut if it ever happens again. Has anyone else had a bag fail mid-trip, and did you fix it or just buy a cheap replacement?
First trip to Bangkok my Osprey zip went at the airport and I had a roll of duct tape plus a shoelace holding it together for 11 days. The tape held fine but the zipper pull was gone so I had to fish the teeth out with a key every time I opened it, which was a pain. What saved me was a cheap luggage strap I bought at a night market for like 3 bucks, wrapped it around the whole bag and it took all the pressure off the zipper. Carabiners are smart too, I keep two on the outside now and clip the pulls together so nothing can slide open. I'd fix over replace any day though, a 12 euro stitch job beats losing all your stuff to a cheap bag that dies in two months.
