Warning: Don't try to stretch a carpet over a mystery floor lump

My old boss, Carl, always said 'if you feel a bump, just stretch harder, it'll flatten out.' I was in a condo in Springfield last week and felt a weird hump under the pad. I did the Carl method, used my power stretcher, and cranked it. Heard a loud crack. Turns out the previous owner's kid lost a solid plastic toy car under there years ago and I just shattered it into a dozen pieces. Had to pull the whole piece back up. Anyone ever found something wild hidden under an old floor?

Man, that's rough. I found a whole set of old dog tags from like the 70s once, tangled in the pad under some nasty shag carpet. Felt like a weird metal clump and just went for it, bent them all to hell.

Yeah, that's a real shame. I read this article about how people are always finding old military stuff in houses, and it's a huge deal for collectors. Those bent tags could have been someone's whole story, you know? It's crazy what gets left behind in walls and floors. Makes you wonder about the person who lost them in the first place, right?

Totally get what you mean, @emery603. I found a little metal box full of old photos and letters once, tucked behind a baseboard. Felt like I was holding someone's whole life in my hands. I managed to get them back to the family through a local history group. It's wild, the stuff that just gets sealed away and forgotten. Makes you want to be more careful when you're tearing into old places.
