Vent: A scared patient made me change my tune on what gets you ahead

I always thought being the best at the technical side of my job was enough. For years, I just focused on getting faster and better at cleanings. Last month, a patient came in shaking and ready to walk out. I slowed down and just listened to their worries for a minute. That small act turned the whole visit around and they booked their next appointment. My manager pointed out later that keeping patients calm is a huge part of our success. Now I get that how you treat people matters just as much as what you know how to do.

Like your 'listened to their worries,' I find that letting them talk first fixes most issues.

Took me way too long to figure that out lol. I used to jump in with fixes right away. Now I shut up and let them get it all out. Half the time they just needed to vent, and the answer becomes clear while they're talking.
