My ex-boss told me to fake it till I make it, cost me a job offer

Back in 2021, my manager at a retail store in Austin told me to stretch the truth on my resume for a coordinator role. He said, 'Just say you ran the inventory system, nobody checks.' I did it, got an interview, and the hiring manager asked me a basic question about that exact system. I froze, had to admit I lied on the spot. The lady was polite but said they value honesty, and I didn't get the job. Has anyone else had a mentor or boss give advice that backfired this bad?

MAN, that is brutal! Who tells someone to lie about something they can get caught on in five minutes? That's not "fake it till you make it," that's just setting you up to look like a fool. I bet that ex-boss gets a kick out of watching people crash and burn. You're honestly lucky that lady was polite about it, because some hiring managers would've torn you apart for that.
