Update: a dispatcher in Reno talked me out of the cheapest quote and I'm glad I listened
Six months ago I was shipping my dad's old F-150 from Reno to Denver and the guy on the phone at the budget broker kept pushing me to book the $650 rate with a company I'd never heard of. I called a different dispatcher just to compare and he flat out said those low quotes sit for weeks because nobody wants the run, then walked me through how to check a carrier's DOT number myself before paying a dime. Has anyone else run into a broker who actually steered you away from the cheaper option, or was that just luck?
That line about the low quotes sitting for weeks because nobody wants the run is the part that got me. I ran into the same thing with a couch I bought off a guy in Sacramento, of all things. He swore he had a shipper lined up for 200 bucks and then ghosted me for nine days while my couch sat in his garage. Turns out the cheap haulers all wait around hoping to stack three jobs in one trip, so your stuff just sits there until they feel like it. I ended up paying 350 to a local guy who showed up the next morning and it was done in one day. Cheap up front usually means you pay for it in waiting, and nobody ever quotes you the price of that.
