Always thought a cheap tarp was fine for rain cover until I tried a proper footprint on a 3-day trip in the Smokies.

That Smokies trip sounds like a rough way to learn that lesson. My old blue tarp got shredded in a windstorm up near Clingmans Dome.

Yeah, that wind up there is no joke. Funny you mention Clingmans Dome, calebh90, because that exact spot taught me the same thing years back. A basic tarp just can't handle those mountain gusts. Had to switch to a heavier, reinforced one for any trip above a certain elevation. The cheap ones turn into confetti real fast.
