A ranger in Yosemite told me my tent was set up for a bad time

I was camping at Upper Pines last fall, feeling pretty good about my new 3-person dome tent. A park ranger walked by on her rounds, stopped, and said 'You know, with that fly angle, the first real rain is going to send water right down the side and into your vestibule.' She showed me how to re-stake the guylines to create a tighter pitch and a bigger gap. It took maybe ten minutes to fix. I never would have caught that from the manual. Has anyone else had a ranger or another camper give you a simple tip that saved a trip?

Oh man, that reminds me of my buddy's trip to the Smokies. He had his rainfly on but didn't know about the little vent windows at the top. A guy at the next site saw it all zipped up tight and was like, "Dude, you're gonna cook in there and soak the inside from your own breath." Showed him how to open them just a crack. It made a huge difference that night when a fog rolled in. He said he woke up dry for once.

That "cook in there" line is so true. I read a gear review that called it the tent sauna effect. Proper venting is a basic skill that gets overlooked way too often.
