Unpopular opinion: sending shutters to a shop is usually not worth it

I went to Precision Camera Works in Portland last month and watched them charge $90 just to CLA a basic leaf shutter. Honestly, I think most of us could learn to do that ourselves with a $30 tool kit and some patience, anyone else feel like these places overcharge for simple stuff?

And honestly I get where you're coming from but $90 is actually pretty reasonable for a proper CLA. Those cheap tool kits on Amazon will work for like one or two shutters before they start stripping screws and then you're really screwed. I tried to DIY a Compur shutter last year and ended up with a pile of tiny springs and a lot of regret. It took a real repair guy three hours and a lot of swearing to fix my mess. So yeah they charge a lot but they've got the right tools and the experience. Sometimes paying up is just saving your own time and sanity lol.

Those $90 CLA's saved me from wrecking two shutters trying to DIY.
