Spent $180 on a fancy toner probe that was DOA, fixed it with a $6 beeper

Ordered that high-end toner from the supply house, first job in Billings it wouldn't pick up a signal through a wall. Took it apart and the internal wire was loose, reconnected it and it works fine, but I already lost half a day on that run. Has anyone else had luck with those cheap beeper tracers on live drops, or am I just asking for trouble?
