DAE get burned by those bargain sharpening steels from the discount bin?

Dropped $22 on one of those no-name steels at a flea market in Flint last month and it just chewed up the edge on two of my boning knives instead of honing them. Lesson learned the hard way, now I'm out the money plus two knives I had to regrind on my 1000 grit stone. What brand of steel are you all actually trusting in your shops?
