Cheap fineliner set fell apart in 2 weeks, my $5 pack of pens beat it

I grabbed a 12 pack of those trendy brush fineliners for $18 at an art store in Austin because the colors looked great in videos. By day 10 the tips were mush and two of them dried out completely. Went back to a plain $5 set I picked up at a dollar store and theyve held up through 3 months of daily spreads. Anyone else notice the expensive stuff is just hype or did I get a bad batch?
