Serious question, is the envelope system actually better than just tracking in an app?
I tried the cash envelopes for groceries for a month after using Mint for years. Having to physically hand over the cash made me skip the extra snacks every time, saving me like $80. Which method actually works better for sticking to a category limit?

The envelope system is basically putting your money on a time-out in the corner. You can't argue with an empty paper rectangle, but an app will just sigh and show you a sad little chart after you buy the fancy cheese. It turns budgeting into a weird, tactile game you can actually lose right at the register. My grocery store trips got way more serious when I had to explain my cookie purchase to a sad-looking envelope of cash.

Honestly, the physical cash is way harder to ignore. Seeing that envelope get empty makes it real in a way a number on a screen just doesn't. I switched to cash for eating out and cut that spending in half without even trying. Apps are great for looking back, but cash forces you to think ahead before you even get to the checkout. Tbh, use the app for tracking everything else, but for your problem categories, the envelope method actually changes your behavior.
