Serious question about hostels vs Airbnb in Porto

I'm heading to Porto for 5 nights next month and I'm stuck between a $18/night hostel in the Ribeira district or a $55/night Airbnb near the gardens. I went cheap on a hostel in Barcelona last year and got stuck with a snorer who kept me up three nights in a row. Has anyone tried a private room in a hostel there, or is the Airbnb worth the extra cash?

Take a hard look at what you actually need from a room after a day of walking around Porto. The private room in a hostel can be a decent middle ground, but it still depends on the hostel's walls and how much noise carries. I've stayed in private hostel rooms where the door was thin as paper and you could hear every conversation in the hallway, so it is not always a guarantee of quiet. What time do you usually get back to your room at night? If you are the type to be out until midnight or later, the Airbnb might save you from tossing and turning over someone else's snoring.

Did you check the noise ratings on Hostelworld before booking? I read a blog post recently that said some hostels in Porto have actually soundproofed their private rooms because of complaints. Might be worth digging through recent reviews for keywords like "quiet" or "thin walls" before you commit.
