That $20 rice cooker from Walmart nearly burned my kitchen down Wednesday

I was making a cheap batch of rice and beans for the week and the thing just started smoking after 15 minutes from the heating element shorting out. Has anyone else had issues with those super cheap rice cookers or did I just get a dud?

Honestly it feels like that's just the deal with anything super cheap these days. You're basically gambling on whether it'll work for more than a few weeks or catch fire the first time you plug it in. I had a $15 toaster from Target start shooting sparks out the slot after three uses. That price point basically means the manufacturer saved money on the one part that keeps things from turning into a hazard.

Wait, is that the one with the white plastic handle and the see-through lid? I had almost the exact same thing happen with mine last year. I was just making plain white rice and after about 10 minutes the whole kitchen smelled like burning plastic. Then the cord started getting hot to the touch. I unplugged it and the bottom was all melted and warped. I threw it straight in the trash and told everyone I know to never buy one. Honestly it's scary how they can even sell those things. You definitely didn't get a dud, they're all like that.
