Showerthought: I found out how much a single bay leaf costs per leaf

I was cleaning out my spice cabinet and saw a jar of them I bought for $4.99, so I counted them and there were 87 leaves. That's less than 6 cents per leaf, which seems crazy cheap for something that makes a whole pot of soup taste better. Has anyone else done the math on a cheap ingredient and been surprised?

But have you ever actually tasted a bay leaf by itself?

My buddy Mike tried one on a dare back in college. He said it was like chewing on a bitter, dusty piece of tree bark. He spent the next ten minutes spitting into a sink and trying to wash the taste out with soda. It completely ruined the soup we were making because all we could smell was that awful taste. I never even considered trying one after seeing his reaction.
