Last month I had a surprise vet bill for my dog that wiped out my grocery budget. I got creative with a big bag of rice, some dried beans, and whatever cheap veggies were on sale. It was a lot of the same meals, but we made it work for about $55. That feeling of stretching things when you have to is real.

Wait, you fed a whole family for a month on just $55? How is that even possible?

Honestly I gotta push back a little on this. $55 for a whole family for a month sounds pretty extreme unless you're already eating rice and beans every single meal. I get times are tough but that's like borderline dangerous nutrition wise if you're feeding growing kids or anyone with health issues. No way you're getting enough protein and vitamins on that unless you're buying bulk chicken or eggs somehow. And if you're buying the cheapest stuff from dollar stores you're probably getting a lot of filler and sodium. Being thrifty is one thing, starving yourself or your family is another.
