Unpopular opinion: hot glue is better than EVA foam for most starter props and a craft fair in Tulsa proved it to me

I used to be a foam guy all the way. Bought the floor mats, the contact cement, the whole setup, probably $80 in stuff for one sword that still looked lumpy. Then about 6 months ago I was at a small craft fair in Tulsa and this woman had a whole table of prop daggers and potion bottles, all built with nothing but cardboard, hot glue, and plasti dip. I asked her how the seams held up and she just threw one on the ground in front of me, picked it up, and handed it over. No cracks, no peeling, nothing. She said the trick is to score the cardboard so the glue sinks in instead of sitting on top. I tried it that same weekend on a $3 stack of dollar store foam board and my next prop came out cleaner than anything I ever did with the fancy stuff. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're building, but for flat panels and simple shapes I'm not going back. Has anyone here gotten hot glue to look smooth without plasti dip over it, or am I stuck spraying everything?
