PSA: I was sure the $1 thrift store curtain would be a disaster, but it carried my whole elf look
I figured a dollar curtain would fall apart on the con floor, but 6 hours in Chicago and it held up better than the $25 fabric I almost bought. That said, someone in my group swears cheap satin always pills after one wear, so who's right here?

Cheap satin pills because of the weave, not the price tag, and a lot of cosplayers wash it wrong which speeds that up. Curtain fabric is usually a tighter weave built to take a beating, so it makes sense it outlasted the pricey stuff. The real test is how it looks after a few wears and a wash, not just one con.
