I finally stopped buying expensive foam for armor builds

Used to drop $30 a sheet on craft store EVA foam for my Warhammer cosplay projects. After a failed pauldron in Orlando last spring, I switched to those $8 interlocking floor mats from Harbor Freight. Sanding them takes longer, but the texture hides mistakes better and I can make three sets for the same cash. Anyone else switched to gym mats or have a cheaper trick for large pieces?
