A con photographer told me my armor looked flat, so I tried dry brushing

Last October at a small local con in Des Moines, this photographer who was taking pictures of my foam armor build pulled me aside and said my pieces looked too flat and plastic-y. I was kind of annoyed at first because I had spent like 60 bucks and two months on that kit. But he suggested I try dry brushing with a cheap dark acrylic paint over the edges and crevices. I went home, grabbed an old brush I had from painting my porch, dipped it in some $2 craft paint, wiped most of it off on a paper towel, and went over the seams. Man, that one step made the whole set pop like it was actually battle worn. I redid all the shoulder pads and chest plate in about an hour, and now I do it on every build before I even think about clear coating. Anyone else ever gotten feedback at a con that totally changed your process, or do you just tune people out?
