Rant: My broker's spread blew out during a news spike and I panicked

So I'm sitting in a diner outside Columbus at 8:30 AM last Friday when CPI numbers drop. My usual 1.2 pip spread on EUR/USD suddenly jumped to 8 pips and my stop loss got hit 15 pips from where I set it. I called support and they said it was volatility, but my order filled way late and I lost $240. Has anyone else had a fill that bad during an NFP or CPI release? What do you do to avoid that, set wider stops or skip the news entirely?
