I thought those laser level things were just a gimmick until I had to lay out a 200 foot retaining wall by myself last fall.

That sounds like a brutal job to do alone. What kind of laser level did you end up using for something that long? I mean, I've used the little ones for hanging pictures, but 200 feet is a whole different game. I'd be worried about the beam being bright enough to see outside. Maybe it's just me, but setting the grade over that distance seems like the hardest part.

You're not wrong about the beam. I had to wait until dusk just to see the dot. Setting grade over that distance was a nightmare, mostly because my dog kept running through the beam and I'd lose the line. Ended up using a rotary laser with a grade rod and a lot of patience. Felt less like a contractor and more like a surveyor who lost his crew.
