I spent a whole summer as a camp counselor teaching kids to find north with moss and I was so proud of myself. Turns out I was just confidently pointing them in random directions for three months. One kid swore the moss was on the south side and I told him he was "reading the forest wrong." Sorry, buddy, you were right and I was the one who needed to go back to nature school. Twelve years is a long time to be wrong but at least you found out before the next batch of scouts.
