Grew basil in a south window vs. a cheap LED bar from the hardware store, and the difference shocked me
I started two basil trays back in March, same seeds, same potting mix, and put one on my south facing windowsill in Queens and the other under a $28 LED bar I grabbed at the hardware store on Northern Blvd. Six weeks in, the window tray was tall and skinny, leaning hard toward the glass, and the leaves tasted weak and watery. The LED tray stayed short and bushy with fat dark leaves, and I was pinching off way more than I could eat by week eight. The big surprise was the stems, the window ones were so thin they flopped over whenever I watered them. I also noticed the window tray got maybe 5 hours of real sun on a good day, while the light bar ran 14 hours on a $9 timer. Now I'm wondering if I should just give up on windowsills for herbs completely. Does anyone here still get good basil from a window, or am I wasting my time?
