Appreciation post: My friend said my plant light setup was basically a disco for my ferns
I had my grow lights on a 16-hour timer for my indoor Boston ferns, thinking more light was always better. My friend came over and pointed out the leaf tips were getting crispy and said, 'You're basically giving them a sunburn in here.' I switched to a 12-hour cycle and moved the lights a full foot higher. The new growth is way greener and softer now. Has anyone else had to dial back their light schedule after seeing damage?

Did you check the actual temperature under the lights? I found my setup was cooking the air right around the leaves, not just giving too much light. A simple thermometer showed it was ten degrees hotter in that spot. Moving the light higher helped with both heat and intensity, so the plants got a break from the double stress. It's easy to forget lights put out real warmth, especially the stronger ones.

That heat point is super important, but crispy tips are usually a light issue first. Ferns just don't handle intense photons like that, they're forest floor plants. The burn happens because the light itself is frying the plant cells, not just the air around them. Dialing back the hours was the right move. What strength are your bulbs, are they the full spectrum kind?
