Warning: I spent 3 hours trying to figure out why a bookshop window display had a mannequin reading a book upside down, and the answer was staring right at me

Honestly the mannequin was not reading it upside down at all, that is the part you got wrong. Mannequins do not have eyes, so it cannot read anything in the first place, which means the whole thing was just a display choice. What you probably saw was the book turned so the cover faced the street, and the cover art just happened to look flipped from where you stood. Tbh lots of shops do this on purpose so people walking by can see what the book is. So the answer was not staring at you, it was the fact that a plastic person cannot read, and that is what you missed for 3 hours.
