Vent: I almost walked past the oddest window in Portland because it took me 45 minutes to spot the tiny sign
Last Saturday I was killing time near Powell's in Portland and saw this indie shop window with nothing but a taxidermy squirrel reading a tiny book. I stood there for 45 minutes trying to figure out if it was a joke or a display for a real title, and the owner finally tapped the glass. She pointed to a 3 by 5 inch card taped to the bottom corner that said the squirrel is named Gerald and he only reads local authors. I used to think these windows were just messy, but now I get that the weird stuff is the point. It made me actually walk in and buy a used copy of a poetry book I would have never touched. Do other shops hide their theme in tiny notes like that, or is Gerald a Portland thing?
