Am I the only one who misses those hand-lettered window signs? The neon marker one at Powell's in Portland felt like art
About 8 years ago the owner of a shop in Portland watched me redo the window chalk art for the third time and told me my letters looked "too neat, like a font." I had been printing the same neat block letters for a year because I thought that's what looked good. He wanted me to write it like I talk, so I started doing sloppy hand lettering with little jokes, and a woman came in laughing about a tagline we put next to a mystery novel. Now every window I walk past with a printed vinyl banner makes me a little sad. Does anyone have a shop near them that still does the hand-drawn thing, or is that fully done?
