Vent: wasted $40 on a book based on a TikTok review and it was unreadable by page 10

I really thought that girl's hype about the writing style would match my taste but the prose was so purple and overdone I couldn't get through the first chapter, has anyone else been burned by social media book recs?

GIRL same thing happened to me last month with a book that had like 50k likes on TikTok. The writing was so flowery and full of random metaphors that stopped making sense halfway through a sentence. I got to page 8 and just closed the book, felt like I'd been tricked into buying something that wasn't even written for real people to read. Now I always check the first few pages on Amazon before I bother spending any money, can't trust those hype videos at all anymore.
