Tried to push through 'The Goldfinch' last month and honestly I'm still mad about it

I kept hearing how the second half of Donna Tartt's book was supposed to redeem the slow start, but after 400 pages of a kid moping around Las Vegas I just couldn't do it anymore. Ngl, I've given up on plenty of books before, but this one felt like I wasted three weeks of evenings on a story that went nowhere. Do you guys push through to the end of hyped books or call it quits once you know it's not for you?

Gotta disagree with you here. That Vegas section is the whole point of the book. You see him make terrible choices and waste his life because his dad's a mess. If you tapped out during the part where he's just existing, you missed the payoff when he finally finds the painting and things get insane. The museum scene at the end hits way harder because you sat through all that aimless misery. Different strokes, but I think calling it "three weeks of nothing" is selling it short.

Yeah I've quit books way later than that. Life's too short to hate-read.
