My sister said my reading list was 'all sad white guy books' and it broke my brain for a week
She wasn't trying to be mean, she just glanced at my shelf in October while visiting my apartment in Toledo and said it out loud. I counted and 19 of my last 25 books were exactly that, so I couldn't even argue. I swapped in six books by writers from other countries over the winter and only one of them actually wrecked me, but in a way none of my usual picks ever did. Now I check my own shelf every couple months and it bugs me how easy it was to stop noticing the pattern. What's the one book that pulled you out of whatever rut you were stuck in?
The "only one of them actually wrecked me" part got me. Same thing happened when I tried to branch out past my usual stuff. Grabbed a book by a Nigerian author at a used store in Toledo, just picked it off the shelf with no plan. Read it in two days flat. Nothing sad white guy about it, just a family and a country and a ton of tiny details I had zero context for. Spent the next week googling every other page. That never happens with my normal picks. Weird how one random grab can crack open a whole shelf.
